HOW TO USE:
Take A Break Mat can be used any time of the day to encourage child
and/or adult reflection on daily choices, challenges, and strengths.
For children:
It is best to first introduce Take A Break Mat to the child, and explain that it will be used as an activity tool and a safe place to reflect about acceptable behavior. At this introductory session, review the questions and affirmations aloud to the child so he/she can become familiar with them.

When Take A Break Mat is needed, a parent, guardian, or teacher simply asks the child to go sit on the mat. The adult can sit with them until ready to answer the questions or tell the child when you are ready, let me know and I will come back to sit with you. Some children may be able to read the questions on their own; some may need the adult to lead them through any or all of the suggested questions. When the child feels he/she has answered the questions or reflected on the day's challenges and strengths, it is highly suggested that the adult and child take time together to read the positive affirmations printed on the right side of the mat. Reading these affirmations aloud is a perfect, loving way to make you both feel happy and connected about your relationship, yourselves, and it paves the way for the child to make more positive choices in the future.

*Every child is different and if he/she doesn't want to sit on the mat for the first couple times it's ok! Keep trying because Take A Break Mat is meant to be a consistent activity. When used consistently, it will help with mindfulness and behavioral awareness.
